Azam football club extended its record of winning the Mapinduzi Cup after beating URA to reclaim this year’s crown in a well balanced final played on Saturday 13th January night at a fully-packed Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.
The Ugandan tax collectors edged the ice-cream-makers 1-0 in the group stages and subsequently finished top of group A.
The highly attended final ended without a goal on either side to force the match to post-match penalty mark kicks where the Tanzanians emerged victorious.
URA had earlier eliminated another Tanzanian side, Young Africans in the semi-finals through spot kicks.
Patrick Mbowa and Brian Majwega’s first and fifth kicks were saved to gift the Tanzanians their fourth title. Charles Sempa, Shafiq Kagimu and Jimmy Kulaba converted their kicks.
URA goalie, Alionzi Nafian, had saved Bruce Kangwa’s shot but failed to match Himid Mao, Yakubu, Enock Atta and Aggrey Moris.
Azam Fc’s keeper Kazak Kabalora was named the man of the match in the final.
