Kirinya Jinja SS moved to fourth place in the Ugandan Premier League (UPL) standings on Friday 9th March, with their fourth victory in five matches after whipping lowly placed UPDF 3 – 0 in Bugembe.
Both sides went to the game on the back of fine runs, UPDF having picked 13 points from a possible 15, in what even saw the team rise from the relegation region but, Jinja SS proved too powerful with an impressive show that saw them complete a double over UPDF.
A barren first was not the precursor of what would follow in the second half, as an explosive Kirinya – Jinja broke the deadlock just six minutes later, through Joel Madondo and shortly after Musa Esenu fired in the second.
Bashir Mutanda sealed UPDF’s fate with the third in the 81st minute, to see the hosts soar as UPDF’s recently found good form came tumbling with the relegation scare seeming real.
UPDF’s stay outside the drop zone despite the heavy loss was heavily aided by Proline FC’s 0 – 1 home loss to Bul, in the other game of the day. The win saw Bul end a bad run that had seen them go winless in three matches, with Hamis Tibita netting the only goal in the 80th minute.
At the Fisheries Training Institute, hosts Masavu were forced to come from behind to hold Bright Stars to a 1 – 1 draw, which was also Masavu’s fifth straight draw.
Kokas Opejo scored the opener in the 61st minute before the impressive Masavu skipper Abraham Ndugwa netted with a fine free kick in the 78th minute to ensure a share of the spoils.
